I was a volunteer for my university’s open day today, and my duty was to guide people to sessions, as well as make sure each session finishes on time. It’s actually a pretty easy job. What I learned from my brief work as a volunteer is that I find joy in helping others.
For a job like this, it’s important to take the initiative in approaching people. Well, that’s what I believe. When you see someone looking lost, just approach them and ask “are you looking for a theatre?”, “is there anything i can help you with?”. Let me tell you. 100% of the people i approached were looking for something, be it the toilet or a friend.
The greatest perk i got out of this was the smiles i received. Every single person i approached, and vice versa, were smiling. Maybe i was smiling first, but still, nothing beats a smile. A smile can lighten a person’s mood. Who knows what kind of day they’ve had?
My main point here is to encourage people to smile at others, and see how many actually smile back. You may even find some surprised faces…
I’m working on this as well, so let’s count the number of smiles we receive!
Happy smiling!
